Dry Cracked Skin on Hands of Workers on Building Site Where Protective Gloves Not Used .

Many Workers on Exposed Building Site, With Dry Cracked Skin on Hands.

Dry cracked skin conditions on the hands of workers on building sites is not uncommon, particularly when working with lime. Wearing protective gloves would undoubtedly reduce the dry skin affects of lime but these are not generally used. Weather-beaten faces and dry cracked skin appear to be the consequences of working on exposed construction sites, particularly where lime mortar is in use.

" " Xeroderma literally means "dry skin". It is a condition involving the integumentary system, which in most cases can safely be treated with emollients and/or moisturizers. Xeroderma dry skin occurs most commonly on the lower legs, arms, the sides of the abdomen and thighs. Symptoms most associated with dry skin Xeroderma are scaling (the visible peeling of the outer skin layer), itching and cracks in the skin

Common Causes

Xeroderma or dry skin is a very common condition. It happens more often in the winter where the cold air outside and the hot air inside creates a low relative humidity. This causes the skin to lose moisture and it may crack and peel. Bathing/showering too frequently, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may also contribute to xeroderma. Xeroderma can also be caused by a deficiency of vitamin A, systemic illness, overexposure to sunlight or some medication. " " Src: Wikipedia

There was certainly no evidence of dry skin on the hands of students and disciples in and around the temple halls, that were being renovated or rebuilt.

Picture of dry hands with cracked skin of a young building work, probably caused by repeated contact with lime mixture.
The picture on the left shows the dry cracked skin on the hands of a young building worker on a construction site. Working with lime without the protection of gloves may have been the cause of the dry skin. He was not the only one with dry skin but he was certainly the youngest, having left school at the age of 12 to help support his family. .
