Beijing: Chinese People In Capital City; Gate Of Heavenly Peace To Forbidden City, Beijing.
Beijing of the present day is almost unrecognizable from the Beijing seen during a guided tour in 1987. There are many new Beijing ring roads, Beijing hotels, Beijing restaurants and there is a sense of affluence amongst many of the Beijing people. There are more private cars in Beijing, and the now numerous Beijing taxis are hired not only by the tourists but also by the Beijing people themselves. This spectacular change in Beijing and China has attracted the outside world like a magnet!
Carrying out the changes that have taken place in Beijing, has also provided much work for craftsmen and laborers, coming into the city from outlying country towns and villages. Usually more money can be earned on building sites in Beijing, than can be earned on the farms. This movement of labour from the countryside to the new developments in cities such as Beijing, has placed an increased burden on the older people left to work the farms and produce the crops. The younger workers migrating into Beijing aim to earn money to support the families they left behind, whom they will visit only a few times in a year of absense.
With the 2008 Olympics Games being held in Beijing, even more changes in the city have taken place during the past five years. To satisfy the requirements and needs of the visitors and the competitors, additional accomodation has been provided with new hotels and training facilities. The new stadia that have been built in Beijing will attract international events in future years, and be available to the people of Beijing for sporting facilities.
The main historical attractions of Beijing, Tiananmen Square, The Gate Of Heavenly Peace to Forbidden City, The Great Wall at Badaling, have seen little changes. It is the city-scape of Beijing that has changed the most. Driving on some roads of Beijing, it is difficult to be certain that you are in Beijing, or in some other capital city of the Western World.
Beijing: Changes Affecting The Chinese People In Beijing And China.

The two Beijing pictures shown on this page could not have been taken by a western tourist, not many year ago. The view of Tiananmen Square, shown in the Beijing picture above, is what would have been viewed by Chairman Mao himself. The only difference would have been the mass of Chinese people in the square trying to get a glimpse of him. Much has changed since then, as can be seen from the second of the Beijing pictures from the top of the Gate Of Heavenly Peace, the first entrance to the Forbidden City. Use of the red carpet is now open to the ordinary people, families and their children, and for some of them, to stand where Chairman Mao once stood, is a special experience. It is from the top of the Gate Of Heavenly Peace that the best view of the Tiananmen Square is seen

The Chinese name of the gate, Tian'anmen, is made up of the Chinese characters for "heaven," "peace" and "gate" respectively, which why the name is conventionally translated as "The Gate of Heavenly Peace". However, this translation is somewhat misleading, since the Chinese name is derived from the much longer phrase "receiving the mandate from heaven, and stabilizing the dynasty." The Manchu name of the gate, Abkai elhe obure duka, lies closer to the original meaning of the gate and can be literally translated as the "Gate of Heavenly Peacemaking." The gate has a counterpart in the northern end of the imperial city, Dė'anmen (Manchu: Na i elhe obure duka), which may be roughly translated as the "Gate of Earthly Peacemaking".
