Dazu: Rock Carvings Of Buddha And Disciples In Grotto at Baoding Hill.
The Dazu Grotto of Buddha Rock carvings at Baoding Hill is one of many in the locality. The Baoding Hill Dazu Buddha Crescent, has niches and small caves, containing thousands of statues of various sizes. This remarkable collection of Buddha rock carving is said to have taken 70 years to complete and has already existed for more than 700 years; the Buddha Rock carvings at Dazu were completed in the year 1249. A project of a monk named Zhao Zhifeng, the Buddha rock carvings include one of the Sleeping Buddha entering Nirvana, and it is said to be more than 30 Metres long. Some of the other carvings in the Dazu grotto are also more than lifesize. There are representation of the lives of ordinary people in the Dazu Grotto that include rock carvings of herdsmen with their buffalo, and a mother's care for her son, from his birth to his marriage. There is a very peaceful atmosphere at the Dazu Grotto created by the inspiration of a monk and the skillful workmanship of the craftsmen.
The Dazu rock carvings are on one side of a valley and from the opposite side, there is a spectacular view of the prominent carvings. The cave walls are carved with many different presentations, of trees and mountains, of spiritual beings and people of this earth. There are flowers in the rock carvings, and carvings of Buddhist followers, and even the head of a Chinese dragon, through which the roof water flows to disappear out of sight. A visit to the Dazu rock carvings is a very memorable experience whatever 'religious' beliefs are held by the visitors.
There are not many sites that can provide this feeling of peacefulness.
Dazu: Chinese People On Streets Of Dazu in Sichuan Province.
At the time of our visit the streets in Dazu were being used by the Chinese people almost as extensions to their living quarters. One Chinese farmer in Dazu spread his rice grain on the streets to dry in the hot sun; spread out during the day then stored or winnowed in the evening. There was a lot of activity on the streets and on one part of the pavement, Chinese mothers and their children took time to sit and chat. A Dazu barber cutting hair in an open fronted shop greeted the local people as they passed. In the cooler Dazu night Chinese people played cards at a table on the pavement, and Chinese children gathered by a street stall frame to talk and play. Dazu people sat on their bamboo chairs at the road side to watch television through the open door of their home.
There was an impression that all the people living in Dazu knew each other, through being related or by their work. There were many small family businesses evident; making noodles; repairing bikes and motorbikes; selling watermelons at the roadside; by the street door of one house during the evening, a small bamboo table was on the pavement displaying a few packets of cigarettes for sale. It would be interesting to see whether any of these rural activities still exist or whether Dazu has moved on into a modern world.
