Changsha city in Hunan Province is well served by the Xiang River. Most of the city of Changsha lies on the east bank and in the center of the Xiang River is the Long Island, over which passes the Xiang River Bridge. From the Changsha bridge the Xiang River looked almost silt-free compared to the Yangtze. The Changsha coolies with their handcarts haul their loads to the Changsha markets near the river. Trees alongside the river in Changsha provide shade for Changsha people to have a snack, to play Chinese chess, or to sleep! On one stall in the Changsha market there were large rolls of Chinese firecrackers for sale, as shown in the picture above.

For the Changsha people there are many reasons to visit the Memorial Park, other than pay tribute to the Heroes Of The Revelution. From the Memorial Building there is a view of the man made lake with a traditional Chinese wooden bridge complete with ornamental roof. There are rowing boats and "Heavenly Goose" pedal boats for hire at the lakeside. For the Chinese school children, having completed their history lesson in the park, it is an opportunity to race and play.
