Winter at the Summer Palace with Frozen Kunming Lake and Chinese Skaters

Kunming Lake, shown in the Beijing Pictures, takes up the larger part of the Summer Palace Park. In the summer time, the park is fairly crowded but as can be seen in the Beijing Pictures, taken during the winter, the park is not visited by many people. Yiheyuan - The Garden For Cultivating Harmony, as it is known by the Chinese People, has its pavilions, terraces and covered walks, which are the main attractions during the high season for tourists. The Beijing Pictures illustrate the attractions of a frozen Kunming Lake for skaters or for sledge rides across the lake to the island.

Alongside the lake at the Summer Palace there is the Long Corridor nearly half a mile long. An open, all wood structure about three Metres wide having trellised sides half a Metre tall topped with wide planks which are often used to sit and chat, or to have a nap. That is in the Summer Time ! On the cold winter days, the Long Corridor has moments when it is almost deserted, as can be seen in the Beijing Pictures.
