Pictures of Beijing: Summer Palace Kunming Lake and Long Gallery In Beijing.
Pictures of Beijing would not be complete without some of the Summer Palace, which is now a World Heritage site. The Long Gallery pictures of Beijing includes one of the Chinese paintings decorating the many sections. The paintings illustrate stories from the classical novels or legends and there are reputed to be 8,000 of them. Only one of these paintings is shown in these pictures of Beijing.
The Summer Palace in Beijing is already listed as a World Heritage Site, but in a few months time [ August, 2008] Beijing itself will be listed as having hosted the Olympic Games of 2008. For visitors to the Olympic Games, whenever they have time available, it will be an opportunity to view the splendour of the Summer Palace, for visitors to Beijing at any other times, the attractions of the Summer Palace should be included on the 'must see' list, whether travelling alone or in a tour group. Even in Winter time, a visit to the Summer Palace is worth the journey, to see how the seasons affect the scenery, and how the local visitors respond. On one Winter visit it was found that the surface water of the Kunming Lake had frozen up sufficiently to bear the weight of skaters and man-powered sledges. It was noted that on the embankments of the Kunming Lake there were a number of signs, in different languages, warning of the dangers of skating on the lake!
Pictures of Beijing: Covered Walkways to the Summer Palace.
Most of the area of the Summer Palace is taken up by the Kunming Lake; see the list of pictures of Beijing above. The lake is used by the Chinese people for boat activities in the Summer months, and for skating and sleigh rides when the lake is frozen in the winter. The winter activities are not encouraged ! With so much use of the Kunming Lake there is inevitably some litter and in the pictures of Beijing you can see a Chinese man on a rowing boat, removing some of the debris in the water.
To get to the Summer Palace from the front entrance, there are flights of steps and covered walkways, as shown in the picture of Beijing on the left. To get down again, it is easier and quite pleasant to use the backway paved area; see the pictures of Beijing listed above.
