Road Conditions On Tongmu Road Causes Traffic Jam.

The countryside road conditions in China were not able, at times, to cope with ever increasing traffic. The road conditions between Tongmu and Pai Lou caused a serious traffic jam during our journey. We were not in any particular hurry, so the road conditions at the time did not affect us too much. The local Chinese people were accustomed to the problems caused by the road conditions, so just made the best of it. When the countryside journey from Tongmu to Pai Lou eventually continued we soon found out the cause of the log jam. The country road conditions had resulted in a holdup in traffic for nearly an hour. The journey from the China town of Tongmu had been halted when one lorry had crashed into a low wall. Another Chinese lorry had attempted to pass the accident on the bridge and got stuck. Neither lorry could move. Road conditions on both sides of the bridge became chaotic. All traffic was brought to a standstill testing the patience of the drivers and passengers. The road conditions were similar when we went to the China town of Pingxiang, on the Chinese-Vietnamese border.

The journey to Pingxiang near the Chinese-Vietnamese border started in the China town of Longzhou. We arrived in Longzhou via Nanning and Fusui to stay with Zhong's family. Our driver for the road trip to Pingxiang arrived at the flat, with his minibus, at 7.30 am. The day promised to be hot and sunny, and at the time we did not think too much about the road conditions we might encounter. The driver joined us for breakfast of noodles, pork, vegetables and soup. After breakfast, when we got into the minibus the engine would not start. The driver borrowed a scooter belonging to Zhong to fetch a mechanic who came and used some magic emery cloth, then there were cheers as the engine sprang into life. We started our journey to Pingxiang with the intention of passing through the Friendship Gate to go to Vietnam.

On a previous visit to the China town of Pingxiang and to the Friendship Gate, there was a tantalizing view of the road over the "No-Mans-Land" to Vietnam. Without a Vietnamese visa, a crossing was not possible. For this visit I was fully prepared with a visa issued in London.
