Terracotta Warriors Site Xian China: Excavation Of Xian Terracotta Army Warriors.

** **

The China photo of the Terracotta Warriors shown below is an official photograph.
Xian is associated with only one thing in the minds of most people and I wonder whether the group would have paid a visit to Xian had the Terracotta Warriors not been discovered by farmers in 1974 ! The site has become a major attraction for anyone visiting Xian City and in the years since they were first unearthed, a great deal of work has been put in to protect the Xian Warriors site, and to continue the process of sectional excavation and research.

The Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi would not have been aware of all the worldwide interest the Terracotta Warriors would bring to the city of Xian, China, centuries after he was laid to rest. The local farmers who unearthed the first evidence of Huangdi's Terracotta Warriors would not have realised the importance of the discovery nor of the potential of fame it would bring to them, and to the city of Xian. The discovery of the Terracotta Warriors has brought much welcomed benefits to the people of Xian, as the increased numbers of visitors to the area, has brought more employment in all the services needed to satisfy the needs of the tourists. The people of Xian have used their skills to produce models of the Terracotta Warriors, and other items of souvenirs to sell at locations where the tourists are likely to visit; including the Xian hotels and restaurants.

Discovery Of Terracotta Warriors At Xian By Chinese Farmers

If you have any information, then I would be glad to hear from you.

Inguun Of Oslo
When she visited the site in June, 2000, a man was signing books, and it was said that he was one of the peasants.
Noel Leinster - 13.02.01
The peasant was given the rights to the tourist book on sale at the site, but the picture in the book is different to the peasant who signs the book for 10 Yuan.
Martha Phelps - 20.06.01
A tourist asked his local guide what happened to the farmer who discovered the vault. His name is Mr Yang and he was paid about $20 and given a new farm by the government. A bus of tourists arrived at Mr Yang's farm but being frightened by the attention he denied his knowledge. A professor taught Mr Yang to write eight Chinese characters, which he writes in the book on sale. After a long day, he will only write two characters, his name.

Models Of Terracotta Army Warriors Supplement Income Of People of Xian, China

The taking of photographs of the Terracotta Warriors in Xian within the covered site was strictly forbidden at the time of our visit although there were many photographs available from official sources, Photo shows a few of the many Terracotta Warriors in the exhibition hall in Xian, some warriors kneeling, some on horsebacksuch as the spectacular one shown on the left. However, it was allowed to photograph specimens of the Terracotta Warriors in the lobby, which were protected by glass cases, so tourists posed by these to be photographed, to get a memento of their visit to Xian. No photograph nor film can truly prepare anyone for the first sight of the Terracotta Warriors on display at the protected site of the excavation. A regimented army of soldiers in position to protect the Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi in the afterlife, in which the people of the time had great faith. There was also the belief that although the Warriors, horses, and other members of the Emperor's entourage were made in terracotta clay in this world, they would emerge in the afterlife as living entities.

Any sites which are likely to attract tourist attention will also attract the local people, seizing every opportunity to supplement their income, and the Terracotta Warriors site was no exception. Outside the exhibition hall was an area where stalls displayed a great number of models of the Terracotta Warriors with each stall holder vying for the attention of the tourists, hoping to make a sale of their goods. Other stalls in the area were selling a variety of goods including fruits, snacks, paintings, even animal furs, and noodles were being freshly made by hand and cooked at the snack bars. It was a prosperous looking area with many benefits to the people of Xian, all brought about by the discovery of Emperor Qin's Terracotta Warriors.

" " The Terracotta Army was buried with the Emperor of Qin (Qin Shi Huangdi) in 210-209 BC (his reign over Qin was from 247 BC to 221 BC and over unified China from 221 BC to his death). Their purpose was to help rule another empire with Shi Huangdi in the afterlife. Consequently, they are also sometimes referred to as "Qin's Armies". The Terracotta Army was discovered in March 1974 by local farmers drilling a water well to the east of Mount Lishan. Mount Lishan is also where the material to make the terracotta warriors originated. In addition to the warriors, an entire man made necropolis for the emperor has been excavated. " " " Src: Wikipedia

The start of these personal webpages and the Vietnam pictures, followed a chance meeting with a young man named Hoang in 1979. Hoang was one of the "Boat People" from Vietnam who arrived in the UK. In due course I was given the responsibility of teaching him some English. A few weeks later I met his family and friends, and subsequently their families and friends, and friends and families, of friends and families.... and so it was that the ideas for the personal webpages began.
