Inquisitive Children In China Town Gather By Open Door

The Children in the China Town of Pai Lou had a big surprise one day when a taxi drove up to one of the houses in their street, and a strange foreign fellow got out to visit a neighbor ! He might well have been a Man From Mars ! Within about tenminutes of getting to Tang's home, the happy children of China gathered at the open street door, laughing and chatting to themselves about the Westerner with his big nose and big feet, because in their eyes all Westerners have these distinctive features.
This unabashed curiosity of children in China was something I had experienced many times before during my travels to the remoter Chinese towns. In many places the children of China had never had any experience of meeting a Westerner, so it was always a delight to observe the expressions on their faces whenever we came across each other.
Children In China Town Sip From Plastic Bottle
Occasionally the attention of the China children was diverted from the foreigner so when these two girls were suddenly distracted by the antics of Wen Wen I grabbed a photo of them. The young girl in a pink dress took sips from a small plastic bottle, although I never asked what it contained. Probably a mixture of sugar and water ! This gathering of children by the street door, remained until it was time for us to walk down the street for our lunch at a small restaurant
Curious Children Of China Gather By Chinese Restaurant
As Tang and the rest of us, including Wen Wen who was holding my hand, walked down the street, some children in this China town watched the procession from the doors of their homes; a small group of children followed behind us, and one of the older boys walked a few Metres ahead, occasionally looking back to make sure that we had not side-tracked him. When we were seated at our table in the restaurant, some inquisitive China children gathered at the door, until the owner decided we should have our lunch in peace, although I was quite happy for the children to remain where they were.
Nephew Eager To Start School
Despite the fact that Tang's nephew Wen Wen had never had any contact with a Westerner before, he accepted my presence as if I was one of the family and called me Grand Pa, in Chinese of course ! At the time of my visit he was eager to start going to school, and proudly showed me the school satchel which had been bought for him. Although by the time I saw him again, he had grown taller, he had still kept his delightful smile.
