The Many Uses Of Bamboo
Sichuan, called Chuan or Shu for short, is located on the upper reaches of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River. With an area of 570,000 square kilometers, it is the biggest province in China. In the southern part of Sichuan, you can see green and luxuriant bamboo covering the undulating hills like an immense ocean. In the Chengdu Plain, you can find bamboo planted in clusters around thatched cottages.
'' Bamboo is also widely carved for decorative artwork. Modern companies are attempting to popularize bamboo flooring made of bamboo pieces steamed, flattened, glued together, finished, and cut. However, bamboo wood is easily infested by wood-boring insects unless treated with wood preservatives or kept very dry.
Bamboo canes are normally round in cross-section, but square canes can be produced by forcing the new young culms to grow through a tube of square cross-section slightly smaller than the culm's natural diameter, thereby constricting the growth to the shape of the tube. Every few days the tube is removed and replaced higher up the fast-growing culm. The fibre of bamboo has been used to make paper in China since early times. A high quality hand-made paper is still produced in small quantities. Coarse bamboo paper is still used to make spirit money in many Chinese communities.'' Src: Wikipedia
A Visit To Suzhou, China.
"I decided to take a rickshaw to the main shopping area so I walked up to the first driver I met and asked, "How much?" He said something in Chinese which I didn't understand so I held up some money and he pointed to the 10 yuan note. I faked being shocked and shook my head so I held up 5 yuan note. He waved me away, so I turned to go. I didn't get more than two steps away before he shouted and called me back." Doug's travelogue is at.... Doug Visits Suzhou
Southern China By Bicycle
"Our first goal was to get out of the city. This was not as easy as we expected because the urban landscape reaches far beyond the city limits of Guangzhou. We went south west and reached the town of Heshan as planned and were immediately the talk of town. Then on to Zhaoqing which is a nice city to stay for a few days and visit the nearby national park. The townsquare where residents come every night to watch the "Music And Light Fountain".
Mythical Beasts And Warriors.
"We then visited the Ming Tombs of which there are 13, but we couldn't go into them. The Sacred Way to the tombs starts at a great marble gateway. Beyond this is the main gate with three archways, the middle passage was only used once in each reign - for the delivery of the emperor's remains to his tomb. From there you walk up a long avenue of stone animals, mythical beasts and warriors. There was a party of school children laughing and giggling, they looked very smart in their yellow hats.
