Li River, Yangshuo

In Yangshuo:
"The smarter backpackers stay in Yangshuo, where there are many small cheap hotels and restaurants catering to the western backpackers, then they take a boat ride up the river, part way to Guilin, returning part way, and then a bus back to Yangshuo for about Y100. This picture shows you why both the travelers and the tourists must take the boat ride. It indeed was incredible."

Beijing, Tiananmen Square

"This is the place I spent most of my Beijing stay exploring. It is a great place to see tens of thousands of Chinese people spending their time talking, gawking, courting, and playing.
I also enjoyed the novelty of being one of the tallest people amongst the hoardes. During three visits I estimate I was asked to join ninety or so family portraits. Simply standing in one place usually drew a crowd of curious people, and each time I went someone adopted me and spent an hour or so asking me in broken english about life around the world.
It was my most enjoyable time in the city."

Soldiers And Babies, Changsha

"I walk often to a coffeehouse. The walk takes me down Yuelue Mountain and into the streets of Changsha. The campus is situated on the west side of the Xiangjiang river. The main city is on the east side of the river and this side maintains some characteristics of a small village. I also walk side streets as often as possible so I will get away from the heavy traffic and mingle with the residents in quieter surroundings."

The Three Little Gorges.

"The Three Little Gorges are located about 7 km from Fengjie. I joined a tour boat and rode up the Danning River to these incredibly beautiful gorges, which will be completely submerged when the Three Gorges Dam is completed in 2003. The ride up alternated with walking through poor and sometimes gratuitous tourist traps. We passed a woman selling tea eggs across from a site which supposedly has the burial site of an ancient minority.
This is probably not true but the suspended coffin cut into a high rock is probably over 1,000 years old."
