Changsha Road Junction By Xiang River Bridge
From the steps of the Xiang River Bridge at Changsha there was a good view of the road below where coolies with their handcarts were transporting loads of cartons to the market stalls and warehouses. Later on, we walked past some of the stalls on which were displayed large rolls of firecrackers, bags of nuts, dried fruits and wrapped sweets, in quantities which only a trader would buy.

Trees In Changsha Provide Welcome Shade
Having walked through a grove of trees alongside the river to get back onto the road, we came across this group of Changsha coolies taking a rest until their next shipment needed moving. Their sturdy handcarts all had pneumatic tyres, luxury models compared with some seen on the streets.

Xiang River Bridge At Changsha
The most noticeable thing about the Xiang River at Changsha, was the fact that the waters appeared to be free of silt; almost crystal clear when compared to the Yangtze or the Mekong rivers.
From the bridge there were good views of the Orange Island which we would visit later, to find fallen oranges rotting away under trees. At the riverside, two shrimp fishermen were inspecting their catch, but from where we were standing, it didn't seem to have been a good day !

Promenade In Changsha Alongside Xiang River
The grove of trees alongside the river provided plenty of shade, just like Shanghai. There was an open air snack bar with tables and chairs for the customers and amongst the trees a number of concrete benches, on which some people were having a nap, and at others, elderly men were playing Chinese chess. It was certainly a popular place for the people of Changsha to be on a warm sunny day.
