CHINA RIVERS YANGTZE
On the morning of the second day we made our approach to the three gorges of the Yangtze River, the sun breaking through the clouds to welcome us. As we drew near, the talkative tourists lapsed into a strange foreboding silence, not knowing what to expect during the passage through the gorges. On completion of the new Three Gorges Dam, what we were about to see, would be lost forever.
CHINA RIVERS XIANG RIVER
From the steps of the Xiang River Bridge at Changsha there was a good view of the road below where coolies with their handcarts were transporting loads of cartons to the market stalls and warehouses. Later on, we walked past some of the stalls on which were displayed large rolls of firecrackers, bags of nuts, dried fruits and wrapped sweets, in quantities which only a trader would buy.
CHINA TRAVEL CANAL GRAND CANAL
It was fascinating to observe the activities on the boats and barges as we passed each other; each barge seemed to bring something new to observe. Canal scenes of barge people who were off-duty seizing the opportunity to finish some knitting; eat some lunch or get some sleep. Whenever we waved our greetings to them, they always responded with a smile and a wave themselves.
TRAVEL CHINA RIVERS LI RIVER
At each bend we were presented with spectacular Li River scenery. Many of the peaks had a legend associated with them, and some rock faces were said to represent figure heads, but I confess that the images were not apparent to me. On the Li River banks, clumps of bamboo were a backdrop to young buffalo grazing on areas nearer the river. Where banks had collapsed, people bathed.
China rivers and canal can be an exciting way to travel in China, in a group or alone. Travel on the China rivers of the Yangtze and Li present ever changing scenery to enjoy; be happy!
