Brick And Stone Walls In Ancient City Built With Salvaged Brick And Stone From Demolished Buildings

Picture of brick and stone wall built from remains of demolished building in ancient city.

Although buildings were demolished in the ancient city of Chung Wo, new stone and brick walls were built, looking like works of art, from the materials that were saved during the demolition. These brick and stone walls were certainly the work of talented craftsmen with an artistic eye, because although the walls of stone and brick had been built with materials from demolished buildings, the brick and stone in the walls had been well positioned to add to their attraction. at least to the visiting westerner!

Perhaps the more traditional way of building walls using these two materials would be to build a layer of stone topped with a layer of bricks. Here in Chung Wo the brick and stone in the wall took on a different pattern, a distinctive pattern, an imaginative pattern! No part of this particular wall appeared to be similar to any other part of the wall. There was a constant search for repeating patterns, but none were found.

*** Stone walls are a kind of masonry construction which have been made by man for thousands of years. First they were constructed by farmers and primitive people by piling loose field stones in what is called a dry stone wall, then later with the use of mortar and plaster especially in the construction of city walls, castles, and other fortifications prior to and during the Middle Ages.

They are usually made of local stone, varying from limestone and flint to granite and sandstone. However, the quality of building stone varies greatly, both in terms of its endurance to weathering, resistance to water penetration and ability to be worked into regular shapes before construction. Worked stone is usually known as ashlar, and they are often used for corners in stone buildings. Granite is thus very resistant to weathering, while some limestones are very weak. Some limestones, however, such as Portland stone have a deserved reputation for resistance to the weather. Src:Wikipedia.Org ***
